EMDR Therapy in Fort Worth, TX
EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful approach to help you heal from trauma, reduce anxiety, and find relief from painful memories. At Dunn Counseling and Consulting, we offer EMDR counseling to guide you toward lasting emotional recovery. EMDR therapy involves the use of bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, auditory tones, or tactile taps, to help individuals process and integrate painful experiences. By targeting the way traumatic memories are stored in the brain, EMDR aims to reduce emotional suffering and enhance resilience. As a structured and effective therapy, it is often employed to treat conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, ultimately promoting healing and emotional well-being.

What is the process of EMDR?
EMDR has 8 Phases that are guided by a therapist who will work to create a safe and supportive process. These phases include:
History Taking and Treatment Planning – history is gathered, and goals for EMDR are set.
Preparation – the EMDR process is explained, and tools and coping skills are discussed. Before moving further, the therapist and client will work together to ensure the client can ground themselves when distressed.
Assessment – Specific aspects of the memory that will be focused on are identified, including associated images, negative beliefs, and physical sensations.
Desensitization – the target the client is working on is focused on while engaging in guided bilateral stimulation to reduce distress.
Installation – Positive beliefs are strengthened and integrated to replace the negative ones associated with the trauma.
Body Scan – Physical sensations linked to the memory are observed and addressed through further processing if needed.
Closure – techniques are discussed and utilized in session to ensure emotional stability and safety until the next appointment.
Reevaluation – At the beginning of the next session, the therapist assesses progress and rechecks the target the client worked on.

What to Expect in an EMDR Session
Many people wonder what EMDR therapy will be like. In your first sessions, your therapist will help you feel grounded, safe, and ready for the process. Together, you’ll identify the memories or experiences to target.
A session may include focusing briefly on a memory while using eye movements or other bilateral stimulation. Afterward, your brain naturally begins to reprocess the memory in a way that feels less distressing. Most clients report feeling lighter, calmer, and more in control over time.
Will EMDR be overwhelming?
EMDR is paced carefully so you don’t feel flooded or retraumatized. How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your history and goals, but many clients see progress within just a few sessions.
How long does EMDR take?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) treatment length can vary based on individual needs and the complexity of the issues being addressed. The overall duration of EMDR therapy may range from several weeks to several months, depending on factors such as the severity of trauma, individual progress, and specific treatment goals. A personalized treatment plan can help ensure that the therapy is effective and tailored to the client's unique situation. Regular assessments throughout the process allow therapists to adjust the frequency and length of treatment as needed.
Does insurance cover EMDR?
While we do not take insurance, we can provide a receipt you can submit to your insurance company to see if they will reimburse you. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.
